Why is the eBay title so important for SEO?

The eBay title is the most important SEO factor for your listing. eBay’s Cassini algorithm scans the title for relevant keywords and thereby decides which searches your item appears in. A poorly optimised title means less visibility — and therefore fewer sales.

The optimal title length: 70–80 characters

eBay allows a maximum of 80 characters in the title. You should use this space as fully as possible. Studies show that listings with 70–80 characters in the title get significantly more clicks than shorter titles. Every unused character is wasted SEO potential.

  • Under 60 characters: significantly worse visibility
  • 60–69 characters: acceptable, but still potential
  • 70–80 characters: optimal for eBay SEO
  • Over 80 characters: eBay cuts off the title — loss of keywords

Place keywords correctly

The most important keywords belong at the start of the title. eBay weights keywords at the start of the title more heavily. The following information should be in the title:

  • Marke (e.g. Nike, Samsung, IKEA)
  • Product name and model (z.B. Air Max 90, Galaxy S24)
  • Size, colour, material (e.g. size 42, black, leather)
  • Condition (z.B. Neu, Neuwertig, OVP)
  • Spezifische Eigenschaften (e.g. wireless, waterproof, foldable)

Forbidden words on eBay

eBay penalises so-called "spam words" in the title — terms that don’t serve the product description but are only meant to attract attention. These words can cause your listing to be placed lower in search results:

  • Superlatives like "TOP", "MEGA", "SUPER", "WOW", "GREAT"
  • Exclamation marks (!!!) and question marks (???)
  • Unrelated keywords that only serve traffic fishing

Frequently asked questions about the eBay Title Checker

How long should an eBay title be?

An eBay title should be between 70 and 80 characters long. eBay allows a maximum of 80 characters — you should use this space fully to fit in as many relevant keywords as possible. Shorter titles waste valuable SEO potential and appear in fewer searches.

Which keywords belong in the title?

A good eBay title includes: brand name, product designation and model number, colour and size, condition (new/used), material as well as specific properties that buyers search for. Always think from the buyer’s perspective: what would someone type into eBay who is looking for exactly this item?

What are forbidden words on eBay?

eBay forbids and penalises so-called "keyword spamming" terms in the title. These include words like "TOP", "MEGA", "SUPER", "WOW", "GREAT", multiple exclamation or question marks, as well as keywords that don’t match the product (e.g. mentioning a brand name you don’t even sell). Such words can cause your listing to be ranked lower in search results.
